Bahamas / Crooked Island
A Shining Light in the Sea of Accommodations

We're all looking for that ideal place to stay wherever we roam. It's hard enough to pick the right island for your mood and your means. But sometimes it's even harder to find the perfect place to call "home" while you're away. It's time-consuming if not mind-boggling, with the array of accommodations out there, all beckoning you to "book" them.

Let us help you see the light! Occasionally we come up with such a great island place, that we must share it with you. Like The Bird Rock Lighthouse Island Inn on Crooked Island Passage. A very short boatride from Crooked Island in the southern Bahamas.

Built in 1870, keepers of the lighthouse lived there for nearly 100 years. Eventually automation came, followed by disuse & finally total neglect. To the rescue in 1999 appeared two diverse men, both whose "labour of love" became the restoration of the lighthouse. This time into a small inn.

DK Ulrich, CEO of Pittstown Point Landings Resort on Crooked Island & Christopher Owens, familiar with lighthouse restoration (this being his second) are combining their talents and money toward this most unusual island project.

The old place is being restored historically correct where possible, with proper building elements & adornments. But, modern conveniences have been well thought out, ecologically and stylistically. Check-in time is not scheduled yet. There's much work to be done.

According to plans, there will be 4 oceanfront suites, encircling the tower that looms above. A formal dining room, a surrounding verandah, an open-air terrace and a library complete the lower section. The tower itself is being given over to a museum/art gallery.

It promises to be a novel experience for guests, as it combines a heady dose of historical architecture & ultra classy accommodations. Outside there's lots of island ambience, too, befitting the incredible setting. The beach is divine. The pristine water offers fishing (bonefish heaven) boating, snorkeling, diving and of course, swimming to your heart's content. Altogether, Bird Rock's idea of luxury will be to take care of you really well, in a really discreet way. We love that.

Next time around, The Bird Rock Lighthouse www.birdrocklighthouse.com may just be the reason you choose an island, rather than picking an island destination first. Either way, if you're looking for an "Out Island" experience with lots of style, check this place out. The drop-dead setting is right out of a castaway novel. It's just you, the water and the beach. Although soon there will be one more addition to this tale. Look up....an incredible lighthouse to call "home." Now that's islandstyle as good as it gets!
