Bag Lady
If
there is one fashion item you notice while shopping the Balearic islands,
it's bags. Handbags, totebags, beachbags, eveningbags, cosmetic bags,
etc.
Leather
is really outstanding here. The best leather shop we found is "te
Cuero" in Santa Gertrudis, Ibiza (email: tecu@gmx.net). The handmade
bags & belts are simple & very stylish, accented with beautiful
hardware. Unlike the factory-made leather that's everywhere.
But
it's the woven grass bags that got our attention. Many are locally
made from esperanto grass, the same material covering espadrille shoes.
But many come from various far off lands. The vast selection of colors,
shapes & sizes, along with reasonable prices, make them an islandstyle
best bet to bring home.
Adrec
(meaning ensemble) is a shop in the center of Soller town, Mallorca,
that's capable of making a bag lady out of anyone. Rosario & her
mother, Piedad, have a keen eye for color & style. Not only in
the bags they stock, but for the accessories they sell, too.
We
scooped up simple but unusual felt necklaces from an artist in Barcelona.
And a few cotton scarves from Denmark's www.jackpot.dk
But it was difficult to choose which bags to take along. The persimmon
tote & nut-brown shoulder bag pictured here, are just two of the
ones we bought. Now, if only we could stop thinking about that citrus
green "clutch" we left behind...
