Lady in White
She'll
never tell you who she is.
Or
who she's supposed to be. But it's obvious she makes a good living, though
she just stands there. Look for her outside of Le Seu's massive doorway,
Palma's magnificent cathedral. She sets herself up on a pedestal near
the church's entrance, attracting crowds who wait their turn to get inside.
She's
close-mouthed because she's a mime. There are plenty of mimes & other
street artists on the Balearic Islands. We saw a man with dressed-up pets
doing tricks. We saw quite a few musicians playing penny whistles. But
the Lady in White was different. She was visually stunning. All floured-up...like
she was ready to be baked. And wearing an all-white costume, accented
by rhinestones & other sparkly things. Her sweet grin made her look
like a fairy godmother of sorts.
We
couldn't take our eyes off her, whoever she was, as she worked the crowd.
Put a coin in the cup. She claps the symbols in her hands & makes
a few stilted moves, as she obligingly poses with you for a snapshot.
And then, just like an automaton, she returns to her pose, never having
changed the look on her china-white face.
Very
few passersby weren't intrigued by the Lady in White. Almost all paused
to look. Almost all gave her some euros. Enough to keep her in flour,
no doubt.
