 By
the end of the day, an oasis appears. A place to rejuvenate. Have a good
meal. And to rest for the night.
This
oasis is the Can Curreu.
A restored rural hotel in San Carlos (Sant Carles), in the countryside
of Northeast Ibiza. It's near (only 25 minutes), yet so far from Ibiza
town & all the action. An oasis of Ibizan hospitality, set among olive
trees & farm fields.
But
don't assume the stylish Can Curreu is some sort of fantasy island escape.
It has all the right comforts. But no overstated luxury or some other,
borrowed island style, lest it lose its true Ibizan character.
This
rural hotel accommodates only 14 people in rooms and suites. The best
reservations are the individual suites with their rooftop terraces.
Like ours, called "Es
Niu." These comfortable rooftop spaces are outdoor living rooms. To
take in the view. To take up a bottle of wine & your book. Or to
just take a nap.
Be
sure to have at least one meal at the Can Curreu's restaurant. Food fresh
from the farm itself & other local delights are done gourmet country
style. Sit outdoors near the centuries old olive trees & breathe
in the scent of herbs as you eat. Delightful.
A
couple of minutes away is the sleepy little town of San Carlos. Notable
for "Anita's Bar," the original hippy hangout of the 60's. Anita's
is still alive & well, though the crowd is now a mixed bag.
Nearby
is Santa Gertrudis. A charming town worth more than a blink. Eat at the Bar
Costa for one of their famous "bocadillos." Wander the streets & visit
the art galleries. Buy a leather bag or belt.
You
won't feel at all near the water (not counting the pool) staying at the
Can Curreu. But actually, the sea is very close. You can arrange a jaunt
on the hotel's motor yacht to cruise the coast & stop for a swim. Or
simply ask driving directions to the many beaches nearby. Please persevere
on the dusty narrow roads. The beaches & swimming are worth it. Our
favorite was the Cala Llenya, with a forested backdrop.
 Use
the Can Curreu as your base & venture out to see all the charm of this
part of Ibiza. It's refreshingly lowkey & has a certain style not
found in the busy resort areas or Ibiza Town. Jade Jagger chooses to
live near
here for a good part of the year (in Saint Joan). Need we say more?
