Ile
de Re has the most stylish accommodations of all the French Atlantic islands.
That makes choosing one difficult. Three of our favorites to consider
in St. Martin de Re (the most upscale town on the island) have similarities:
Each has only a handful of rooms (that means reserve early). They have
lots of charm. They're in exquisitely renovated old buildings. And all
of the owners are delightful. Helping to make your stay in Re wonderful
(even if your French is not up to par).
That
said, there are differences in choosing the type of chic you book. Here's
what we think of our favorite 3. Hopefully it will help make your decision
on where reserve a little easier:
Domaine
de la Baronnie is the grand-dame of the three. In size,
grandeur & publicity. The 18th c. mansion & its owners have
been in many of the best style magazines. And deservedly so.
Some of the rooms are grand in scale. The garden is fabulous. Furnishings
fit the setting. Like huge canopied beds & antiques chairs. The
location is perfect. On a quiet street but very near the port.

To Consider: The furnishings could be a little more comfy. And a little
less faded grandeur in the large rooms.
La
Maison Douce is very Provence in style. In a typical
19th c. town home, in a quiet neighborhood (but still near the port).
The rooms are cozy with very comfortable furnishings. The color
scheme reminds you of the beach. White, with the color of sand,
old french linen & sisal.

To Consider: The decor may be a little too "done-up" & overly furnished for some (though tastefully so).
Le
Corps de Garde is in an old 17th c. guard house, right
smack on the quay. The views over the harbor & ocean are wonderful.
The architecture & dÈcor combine the antique & modern
very well. Comfortable & atmospheric, with a nautical feel.
Keywords: Eclectic, comfortable, Chic.
To Consider: Noise of the port at your window. Because of the layout,
very private "types" may find it a little too friendly.
More like a home than a hotel.
