How
can you not take the quick trip over to French Corsica, if you're
already up North in Sardinia? Definitely go. And stay a couple of
days to see Bonifacio. A major port at sea level. And an even more
beautiful city up on the rocks. You either stay up. Or down. Both
have their own character. Both are interesting.
The
view approaching the port is magnificent. An ancient village seems
to have sprouted from limestone rock. Way up high. Similar
to the Greek island Santorini. But not volcanic like Santorini. Layer
upon layer of rock is sandwiched together & windswept into undulating
shapes. The color is brilliant white, pink or gray, depending upon
the light & time of day. Look up. Note the walls enclosing the
ancient citadel, as you glide into the harbor.
There are plenty of accommodations, going from very inexpensive to
higher end. Corsica's hotel rating system is peculiar. A 3-star rating
was given to two very different hotels we booked. One should have
been a 4+ star. The other a 2 star. You get what you pay for. Don't
go by the star system here. Look at rates quoted. Ask questions.
Bonifacio is a fascinating town. Up top, the Old City has narrow
alleyways with century old houses jammed together. Elder Corsican
women hang out from shuttered windows, overlooking everyone below.
Still an Italian feel, but with a decidedly French edge.
You'll see lots of interesting little food shops. We found some great
tarts. The kind only the French know how to make. It's nice to be
on holiday in Northern Sardinia (Italy). And even nicer to have fine
French food, just a hop away.
