France / Corsica
"
Up" is where you'll find the Hotel Genovese www.hotel-genovese.fr And that's the only place to stay in Bonifacio, Corsica. Up top. In the
Old City.
The Genovese is a welcome site. Or rather, their private parking lot
is. After maneuvering up to the old part of town. The hotel's front entrance
is unremarkable. But the rooms are as "soft" as the city of
Bonifacio is "rock-hard." We recommend Junior Suite #3. Comfortable
big beds. And the hydroject in the glass cube shower was especially appreciated.
Before showering though, check out the view from your private terrace.
The view way down, where water & rock meet. And where pleasure boats
are moored. Then have a look at the pool area. Enclosed by thick stone
walls. Actually a part of the old citadel's ramparts. With small ancient
windows, for viewing what's going on, down at the port.
The pool is painted a sand color, giving the water its pale, limpid shade
of blue. It goes perfectly with the worn limestone surroundings. The
entire pool/terrace enclosure is architecturally stunning. A great design
of old & new. It's a relaxing refuge from the bustling town & horrible
traffic, just outside.
Reserve a table at the Stella d'Or for dinner. Family run, fine dining.
With a wonderful Corsican flair to the menu. There's not much in the
way of shopping. But there are some great little food stores. Our favorite
find was the delicious lemon tarts at Boulangerie Faby. Only the French
can make them so good!
Visit the Galerie Mediterrananee, in the old city. You'll know when you're
at the right spot, when you see the reclining bronze figure on the park
bench just outside.
Important Note: The Hotel Genovese has 3 stars. They deserve 4(+) in
our book. Another Bonifacio hotel we booked also has 3 stars. And if
you ask us, that one barely deserved 2! Don't go by the star system in
Corsica. Let price-point (you get what you pay for) & answered questions
be your guide. Stay up top at the Genovese, in the old part of the city & you'll
still have access to the lower port area with no problem.
