France / Ile de Re
True
to Itself
  Fashion
is no big deal on Belle Ile. Islanders are like their New England Island
counterparts. But more Maine Island than stylish Nantucket. The dress
code is a Breton one. That is, it takes its cue from Brittany. A seafaring,
rough & tumble area, in Belle Ile you dress for the weather. Function
& quality are most important. Fabrics are utilitarian & are made
to last. Like canvas shirts & the ever famous peacoat. A conservative,
marine style.
Even
more traditional is the French Breton-striped clothing. Especially the
cotton, boatneck t-shirts. The heavier weight, better quality ones (be
sure they're all cotton) are wonderful to bring home. And the little striped
baby clothing is precious. Stripes come in all colors. But only the authentic,
dark navy & white looks right.
Men
seem to have an edge in shopping. This boating & fisherman's heaven
knows how to dress its captains & first mates. Boat shoes. Great wool
sweaters. Rain jackets. Hats. You sense a bit of Ralph Lauren style (not
his clothing) in what you see. But this is the real stuff. Made for the
wearer's real lifestyle. Manufacturers of the best clothing are French
(thankfully).
The
canvas totes & jackets and the stripped Breton shirts are the best
bets for woman. Non- traditional Belle Ile clothing is hard to find. Islanders
& the mostly French (non-Parisian) tourists don't want it. This has
kept the island "true to itself." So far. But if you crave that
all white & beige look while you're there, check out "Rives"
in Palais. Silks & soft wool clothing, with luxury blankets & home accessories, too. A great shop. But we're glad we couldn't find others
to report on.
