One to Eat, then one to go
 When
hunger hits, think lobster, lobster & more lobster. Quite simply,
lobster is the food of choice here. And we want you to get your fill of
it... one way or another.
As far as we're concerned, the best lobster to be had is in Maine. The
best way to get it is at a lobster pound, where the fare is served up
simply & casually. Sometimes there are plenty of extras. Corn on the
cob. Clam chowder. Steamers. But that's not what you came for. It's the
lobster.
That's not to say
you can't get your fill of this scrumptious crustacean elsewhere, on other
New England islands. You can. But Maine lobster is somehow the best. Try
two of our favorite Maine island lobster pounds and see what you think:
Beal's Lobster Pier in Southwest Harbor (Mount Desert Island) & Anderson's Lobster Shack on Bailey Island.
After you've
eaten, may we suggest a lobster to go? A lobster boat, that is. Sometimes called
a picnic boat (love the name). These are pleasure cruisers. They're finely
crafted, with a real working boat philosophy & the appearance of a
traditional lobsterman's vessel. But we're talking luxury here. A far
cry from original lobster boats called dories.
Southwest Harbor
in Mount Desert Island, Maine, is the home of some of the finest boatbuilding
companies today. The Ellis
Boat Company has been making beautiful lobster yachts to order
for years, with a mahogany patina that screams classic. In other words,
these gorgeous boats are the stuff of Ralph Lauren ads.
Hinckley
Yachts also builds some incredible luxury
boats, including their Picnic Boat. Hinckley has yacht charters (sailing
as well as motor) available to introduce you to their boat line. Take
one out and we bet you'll want to trade in your dinghy! Martha Stewart
did!
Lobster boating
without your own boat is possible and probably more practical for most
people. Check out Maine's Lulu
Lobster Boat Cruises from Bar Harbour (Mt. Desert Island).
Get over the name because the cruise is really good. This is a traditional
wooden lobster boat. Accommodating only 6 people at a time max, it is
a personal way to cruise by private islands & through various harbors
to see charming summer homes along the shore.
Not only
is the boat full of character, but so is the captain. He's well versed on lobstering,
including its practice & lore. And, he just happens to have been a
professional chef. Maybe a lobster recipe or restaurant tip is in his
repertoire for you?
