Big Style Comes Ashore... FURNITURE
There’s new big style in a little creole cottage on St. Barts.
It’s the new Chistian Liagre shop across from the harbor
in Gustavia. Although the small space doesn’t do Liagre's
sleek line, dark wood furniture justice, it doesn’t much
matter. Savvy fans of the furniture designer will be happy just
to have his signature style on island.
Liagre is currently working on a small beach hotel, the Hotel de
Pechers, on St. Barts which will feature his furnishings in a relaxed & glamorous
setting. It's supposedly going to be ready for this year's Christmas
season, but don't hold your breath.

For Your First
Time. And For Our Next... HOTEL
We’ve just discovered a gem of a place to stay in the charming
village of Noirmoutier en l’ile, on Noirmoutier, a French Atlantic
Island known for its salt beds & fresh fish, La Maison de Perle
(tel: 02 51 391208) was built in 1621. The 5 rooms in the old stone
residence are architecturally elegant but furnished in a stylishly
simple manner. Wish we had known about this one last time we visited
the island. Book soon for summer. And don't forget to visit Dames
Beach, a favorite spot of
ours, when you're there.

Voluptuous Women & Corned
Beef... ART EXHIBITS
Paradise is an island. At least we think so. And who better to portray
an island paradise than Gaughin? Get to the Museum
of Fine Arts in Boston to see his Polynesian paintings,
Gaughin Tahiti, now thru June 20th. Twenty five of his works reveal
his
deeply colorful view of paradise: voluptuous women, lots of fruit,
swaying palms & clear blue skies.
You’re in for a different view of paradise at the Asia
Society and Museum, thru May 9th. Paradise Now? Contemporary
Art from the Pacific features 15 contemporary Pacific artists with
a less idealized view than Gaughin’s. The stand-out, as far
as we’re concerned, is the cow constructed entirely of corned
beef tins. The outside world introduced the islands to corned beef,
which now is an integral part of their diet. Canned paradise? This
exhibit gets you thinking. |
Classic,
White and Blonde... BOOK
Since Islandstylebook loves Harbour Island, we couldn't wait
to get our hands on a copy of the book "Island Life/Inspirational Interiors" by
famous model, India Hicks & her partner, David Flint Wood. It's
a visually beautiful look at her homes and her work on refurbishing
The Landing Hotel . The newly published
book is a good introduction to the island itself & then shows
you the model's interior design savvy. Most of her style is classic,
white & English-reserved that goes well with her tow-headed children.
We especially love the way she displays her family's stuff of travels.
We only wish the book had a resource section. And in our opinion,
the frontispiece & back cover, with India languidly perched in
a tree, is not very becoming or necessary for an interior design
book. But then, fame sells. |
