"Christmas
Island Present"
A Christmas present for the man who has it all is
hard to come by. Especially if you've already done the "dream week"
thing for him at baseball camp. A Christmas present on Christmas Island
could be your answer.
Book a week-long flyfishing vacation on Christmas Island. About 1300 miles
south of Hawaii, near the equator, this trip is serious stuff for the
serious fisherman. 650 miles of bonefish flats make the island one of
the top fly-fishing destinations in the world.
Fishinginternational.com
offers a week-long trip for about $2,600 from Honolulu. This includes
all meals and lodging in a rustic, palm-thatched lodge. Sort of Hemingway
in style, from what we've heard. But somewhat further south than Key West,
of course.

"Book a
Top Banana"
La
Banane keeps getting publicity. We've covered it, after our delightful
stay (see feature in Live it!). Travel & Leisure covered it. And
now Town & Country magazine has followed suit.
In high season (December thru April), island accommodations on St. Barths
are difficult to come by, if you don't book very early. La Banane's
guest list is still growing, so you may be able to sneak in some time
without too much wait. But hurry. The publicity is growing as fast as
their bookings, in what Town & Country calls "pocket-size"
and we call "charming" hotel.

"The Man & His Leopard"
Legendary moviemaker, Visconti, brought the famous novel,
"The Leopard," to the big screen in 1963. This month, photographer
extraordinaire, Bruce Weber, pays homage to Visconti's film in Vanity
Fair magazine. He photographs Italian actress Monica Bellucci in fabulous
original costumes worn by Claudia Cardinale in the film.
Amy Collins' article is about Visconti's life & particularly his movie,
shot on the island of Sicily. With a good mix of Weber's fashion photos,
vintage movie photos & photos of Visconti, himself, the article is
a visual journey to Sicily of another time, with a contemporary twist.

"Eyewear
According to Pop"
These glasses aren't
for real. Or are they? We'd like to know who would special order a pair
of these Gaultier of Paris jeweled eyewear...
Think frames with slinky "chains" of tiny jeweled beads, hanging
over your eyes, to your chin. Now add "eyes" designed with
more beads. Set to look like they are painted on. These glasses are
for real. Real couture. And featured in this month's Bazaar magazine
in the article, "Pop Couture," photographed by Richard Burbridge.
Gaultier's glasses could be real islandstyle. That is, if you wear them
to the next masked-ball you're invited to at some opulent palace in
Venice.
